privacy policy

Last updated: July 15, 2026

Courtship helps people find others nearby to share badminton, padel, tennis, table tennis, squash and volleyball courts with. This policy explains what personal data we process, why, and your rights under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

who is responsible

The data controller is Courtship Finland, Yliopistonranta 10 2nd Floor, 65200 Vaasa, Finland.
Contact: hello@courtship.social.

what we collect

We collect only what the app needs to work:

  • Account data: Your email address, and either a password (stored by our authentication provider in hashed form; we never see it) or, if you sign in with Google, the email address, name, and profile photo your Google account shares with us.

  • Profile data you provide: First name, last name (never shown publicly), a general home area (a neighbourhood, not a precise address), travel radius, the sports you play and your skill level, playing intensity and group-size preferences, availability, an optional profile photo, and whether you list your profile publicly.

  • Match activity: Matches you create, join, request to join, or leave, including date, time, and venue.

  • Chat messages: Messages you send in a match's group chat, stored so every member of that match can read the conversation, including its history.

  • Reports: If you report a player or a match, we store your report and account ID.

  • Technical data: Our infrastructure provider (Google Firebase) logs standard technical information such as IP address to operate and secure the service.

We do not collect your precise device location (no GPS tracking); venue coordinates are our own data, and your home area is a coarse, self-chosen field. We do not use advertising trackers, and we do not access your contacts.

why we process it

  • To provide the service: Account, profile, match, and chat data are needed for the app's core function of matching players and letting joined players coordinate.

  • To keep the service safe: Handling reports and preventing abuse.

  • With your consent: Your optional profile photo, and listing your profile publicly. You can withdraw either at any time.

signing in with Google

If you choose "Continue with Google", Google shares your email address, name, and (if set) account photo with us to create or access your account. We use your Google photo only as your starting profile photo, and only with your confirmation; you can replace or remove it. We never look up a photo by email or from any other source.

where your data lives

Data is stored in Google Firebase (Firestore and Firebase Authentication) in the europe-north1 region (Finland). Google acts as our data processor under the Google Cloud Data Processing Addendum, including EU Standard Contractual Clauses where applicable.

who can see what

  • Your profile is listed in the players directory by default. Other signed-in players can see your display name, photo, sports, skill levels, and availability. Your home area, address, and exact location are never shown to anyone. A coarsened version of your home coordinate, rounded to roughly a neighbourhood, is used only to work out which players and matches are near you, and is not displayed to other players.

  • You can switch to private at any time in Profile > Privacy. A private profile is unlisted (removed from the directory) and your availability is hidden; other players only see basic information if they encounter you through a shared match.

  • Match rosters and chat: Anyone in a match, or who opens that match, can see who has joined and, if they join, the group chat and its history. This applies regardless of your public/private setting, so treat match chat as visible to everyone in that match.

  • Your email address and last name are never shown to other users.

  • We do not sell your data, share it with third parties for marketing, or use it to train AI or machine-learning models.

how long we keep it

Your data is kept while your account is active. When you delete your account in the app, your profile, photo, and private details are deleted immediately. Your display name may remain briefly in past matches you joined until routine cleanup removes it. Chat messages remain visible to a match's members for the life of that match. Reports are retained for up to 90 days for safety purposes.

your rights

You have the right to access, correct, delete, and export your data, to restrict or object to processing, and to withdraw consent at any time. You can delete your account directly in the app (Profile > Danger zone > Delete account), which removes your profile, photo, and login. For anything else, contact hello@courtship.social.

You may also lodge a complaint with the Finnish supervisory authority: Tietosuojavaltuutetun toimisto (Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman), tietosuoja.fi.

age limit

Courtship is intended for users aged 16 or older. We do not knowingly process data of younger children.
